How to make the Ultimate Bone Broth

A few years ago when my oldest daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease we needed to change her diet. I started to make more homemade wholesome food. It was hard to eat out and buy food because it was hard to make sure it was gluten-free. I started to make bone broth to cook with. I could control how the bone broth was made. Bone broth also has the added benefit of helping her gut heal from all the damage that was done by the gluten she had eaten. It really is so simple to make and has great health benefits.

The Ultimate Bone Broth

Some great benefits of eating the ultimate bone broth are boosting your immune system, healing your gut, improving joints, skin and hair from the collagen packed in it.  It also has many vitamins and minerals too. The great thing about making bone broth at home is that you can control what goes in to it. This works best for us since we have to live a gluten free lifestyle.

Bones

I use three different types of bones in the ultimate bone broth to get the most collagen, vitamin, and mineral packed broth possible. The main bone is the beef marrow bone. The second, is ox tail and the last is a few chicken feet.

Another option if you would like to richen up the flavor would be to roast the bones in the oven before putting them in the Instant pot. For this recipe though, I kept it simple and quick. I just threw them in the way they were.

Hold on, what? Chicken feet? Who knew, till now. Well, Lets talk about the chicken feet for a minute. These are made of joints, tendons, and bones with little to no fat. They are the best bang for your buck for collagen. Literally, they are so cheap. Funny part is – the kids always giggle when they see me pick them up at the grocery store.

A quick funny story, my littlest one was jumping around and bumped her chin at the grocery store. So, what was our first reaction. Grab the chicken feet! They actually worked as a cold compress too! 🙂 She didn’t complain.

Instant Pot

When cooking my ultimate bone broth I use my Instant Pot. I find the pressure cooker has had the best results in making the broth. The bone broth can be cooked under pressure yielding more collagen. It also doesn’t take as long using the stock pot on the stove. The Instant Pot I use has a broth setting. All you have to do is set it and forget it! The Instant Pot takes care of the rest. It cooks it on high pressure for four hours.

Other ingredients

After all the bones have been collected. I keep it simple. I use carrots, celery, and onion. In culinary terms it’s called a mirepoix. I also add a little fresh garlic. I don’t add salt or pepper. By keeping it salt and pepper free I can adjust that later on when cooking with it. Filtered water is also added to fill the pot so everything can merry together under pressure in the Instant Pot.

Apple cider vinegar

Wait! Don’t forget one last thing. Apple cider vinegar. The acid in the apple cider vinegar is used to help draw out more of the minerals from the bones. Apple cider vinegar also has its own health benefits too! Adding it to this ultimate bone broth helps make it even better. Good, organic, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar is full of gut-healthy bacteria. It also includes active yeast and essential amino acids.

Jiggle till it wiggles

Ha, that sounds funny but seriously after you cooked your ultimate bone broth and have cooled it in the fridge it should giggle like Jello. That’s how you know its good! All the collagen is now in the broth. The longer you cook it the more dense it will get. Also, the more bones you put into your Instant Pot will make it thicker too.

Beautiful Bone Broth

The end result is this luxurious looking broth. The deep color lets you know that it’s concentrated with goodness! My daughter’s enjoy it just like this sometimes. They asked for it warmed up and sip on it. It’s great on a cold day.

Storing the bone broth

After its cooled off I ladle it into quart sized freezer bags and lay them flat in the freezer. I then can use them whenever I need later on. Some of this batch didn’t make it into the freezer. We made a chicken stir-fry and added it into our rice.

Another way to store them is to pour some into an ice cube tray. After they are frozen then you can store them in a zip lock bag in the freezer. It’s a great way to add just a little bit of flavor to sauces or veggies. Just another way to sneak in those vitamins, minerals and collagen to your meals.
