Winter Yarn Wreath

I finished making this pretty winter yarn wreath.  This winter yarn wreath uses pom-poms to make it fluffy and warm for the winter. Oh, the color is in season also.

I incorporated a cozy chenille yarn and a soft baby blanket yarn to have this wreath create a winter feel. In making this wreath, you must make pom-poms with the yarn. I especially like the look of the chenille yarn because it reminds me of white fluffy snowballs.

How to make the Winter Yarn Wreath

So, to make this beautiful winter yarn wreath, you need to start with 2 skeins of yarn. I picked one skein of chenille yarn and one skein of baby blanket yarn. More on what yarn to use later on. You also need to get a wire wreath from to hot glue the yarn pom-poms on to. Finally make sure you have a wreath hook to hang your finished wreath on your door to showcase your work.

How to make pom-poms

The main focus of this wreath is the yarn pom-poms. I don’t have a pom-pom maker so I made my own. It works just as good as the plastic ones  and is cheaper. You need to get a piece of cardboard and measure it to be 3.5 x 4.5 inches. For my piece of cardboard I doubled up two pieces together so it was sturdier to hold the yarn.

After you have your cardboard ready to go, cut a piece of yarn about 6 inches long and set aside.  Then pick up the yarn again and start to wrap it around the cardboard several times. This will depend on the yarn but you want to wrap it around about 25 to 30 times. Less times for thicker yarn and more times for thinner yarn.

Then, cut the yarn from the skein. Proceed to slide the wrapped yarn off the cardboard. Once it is off the cardboard wrap the 6 inch piece of yarn around the middle of all the yarn. Tie a knot twice to secure it. Then, take your scissors and cut all the loops on both ends.

Once the all the loops are cut fluff up the yarn and trim any long pieces sticking out. Make sure all the pieces of yarn are cut evenly and the pom-pom takes on a round shape.

Yay! Congrats you make a pom-pom. Now, make pom-poms till the 2 skeins of yarn are gone. That way you have enough to fill up your wreath.

What you need to make this craft

  • 2 skeins of yarn
  • wire wreath frame
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • wreath hanger
  • 3.5×4.5 piece of cardboard

Choosing colors and yarn to use

For this winter yarn wreath I chose colors that remind me of winter. When I think of winter I think of cold, white snow. This reflects in the yarn that I picked. The first color I chose was a white chenille yarn. This yarn makes nice fluffy and full pom-poms that remind me of snow balls. Who doesn’t love a good snow ball fight? lol. The second color I choose was a variegated baby blanket yarn that is supper soft and fluffy too. I decided after I made all the pom-poms to place them in a every other pattern on the wreath frame. As you can see from the photos the colors compliment each other and definitely  looks like winter.

Mainstays chenille chunky yarn, #6 bulky, color ivory

Bernat Baby Blanket yarn, #6 bulky, color little sandcastles

How to display your wreath

I think the best place to display this wreath is inside. Since the yarn is soft and fluffy I don’t think it would fair well on the outside of the front door. Either placing it on a coat closet or bathroom door would be great for your interior winter décor. You could even put it on the back of the front door too.

Why should I make this wreath

Wreaths are a great addition to your home décor. They add a layer of style and texture to your home. They also greet you and your guests when they enter a room.

Wreaths are also a good décor option because they are easily changeable. You can have a wreath for every season or holiday. I have made a few different ones for my home as you can find listed below.
