How to set up your Berkey Water Filter

Today I am going to show you how to set up your Berkey water filter. With a few steps you will be drinking fresh clean water in no time.

We use our Berkey water filter everyday at our house. It takes only a few short steps to set up and it is ready to go.

In this post I will show you how to set up your Berkey water filter step by step with picture instructions. You can also check out my YouTube video for video instructions below.

Wash

After unpacking you Berkey bring all the parts over to the sink and give them a good wash. I wanted to make sure I washed away anything that got on it from the factory and shipping. Also, to have a clean start when I add water for the first time.

I only used some dish soap and a microfiber cloth.

I used a microfiber cloth so I was careful not to scratch the stainless steal canisters.

Handle

First, I added the handle to the stainless steel lid. I proceeded to attach the handle with a screw. I used a screw driver to make sure it was secure.

Bottom ring

For the bottom canister it comes with a rubber ring that fits snuggly around the bottom. I think this helps with keeping the Berkey in place so it doesn’t slide around. It also protects the bottom from getting scratched.

Spigot

Next, I am going to add the stainless steel spigot. The Berkey comes with a plastic spigot, but I upgraded and got the stainless steel one.

It comes with two rubber gaskets. One for the inside and one for the outside.

Make sure to secure the spigot tight enough that water will not leak out.

Air clip

My Berkey came with this air clip. You place it on the lip of the bottom canister. It helps with air flow when you pour yourself a cup of water. See photo below where to place the air clip.

Plug

So for now I only have two filters for my Berkey. There is an option to have four filters. Since, I only have two I need to use these plugs to close up the other two holes. Here you see there are two plastic plus with rubber gaskets on them.

Attach them securely. See photo below how they look after attached to the top canister.

Prime the filters

Your Berkey will come a rubber attachment for your faucet. First, attach one end to your sink faucet, then attach the other end to one of the Berkey filters.

Turn on your sink faucet slowly. Let the water start to come through the filter.

Let the water run for a few minutes to make sure you got the whole filter filled with water and the water is saturated.

You will start to see water bubbles coming through the filter.

Insert the primed filters into the top canister. Then, screw on the nut and rubber ring that are provided. Do this for both filters. See photo below how it will look after attached.

Put it all together

When all the parts are together, you can put the top canister on top of the bottom canister and add the lid on top.

Here you see the Berkey water filter all assembled.

All you need to do know is add water and enjoy it!

Not pictured here but I did also buy a stainless steel stand to place it on.
