Sherpa sweaters are very popular now. Everyone seems to have different colors and styles. You can also get sherpa vests, sherpa blankets, sherpa pillows and sherpa socks. I even saw a sherpa dog jacket. How cute? Right!
The sherpa sweater that I am using for this tutorial is from Aerie. And it even has pockets!! I love pockets. Quick story about pockets… I once sewed pockets into a bridesmaids dress to carry my phone and lip gloss. Everyone was like that’s so cool and it was.
ATTENTION *The fabric softener that I used was just what I like to use. Use what you like or have on hand. I know some people are sensitive to washing/softener products so use at your own risk.*
*Test in a small area first before brushing the whole sweater to make sure you get the results that you want.*

I also found this one, that is similar here: Womens sherpa pullover.
Solution for your problem
Ever get sad when your sherpa gets flat and matted together? Me too, girl! Let me show you how I fix that.
My first thought when I bought a sherpa was, “How am I going to keep this from matting together??” Even washing on just cold cycle and air drying I wasn’t happy with the results. So, with a little elbow grease and a few supplies I was able to bring it this lovely sherpa sweater back to its soft self again.
As you can see my sherpa sweater got flatten down a lot around the elbow. I am obsessed of wearing it. Also from washing it makes it this way too.
If you can try and not over wash your sherpa, it will help extend the life of it.
Supplies
What you need to restore your sherpa sweater is:
You will want to wash your sherpa first. Make sure you follow the directions on the wash tag. Also, check the label in case yours says dry clean only. I turned mine inside out and washed on cold gentle cycle and I did not put it in the dryer. I used laundry detergent and Downy free and gentle fabric softener. Using a gentle softener on the sweater will help the fine fluffy material.
I turned my sherpa sweater inside out when I washed it.
Toss it in the washer machine on gentle cold cycle. DO NOT PUT IN DRYER!
A tip when washing. Wash the sweater on its own. Don’t wash with other clothes. It will help cut down on matting from the other clothes rubbing on it.
Add a little detergent for a small load size and some fabric softener. Got to have some of that.
Spray bottle
I have a small spray bottle that I used to add water and fabric softener.
Fill with water and add about 1 to 2 tablespoons of fabric softener. If you have a large spray bottle add 3 to 4 tablespoons of fabric softener.
You just want a little to get the sherpa soft and manageable surface for the bristle brush. Also, it will leave it feeling soft and fluffy. Just like new!
Spray a few spritzes in a small area to work on. You don’t need to much. Just enough to keep it damp to help the bristle brush get through. Then, using the bristle bush start brushing out the matted sherpa. I found it easy to brush all in one direction, then back brush it in the other direction to really fluff it up.
Mine shed a little after brushing. Just get a feel on how hard or soft you need to brush yours to get the results you want.
Results
To show you a side by side comparison. Here you can see on the right side its fluffed back up again. The left side was not done yet.
Keep working the entire sherpa sweater in small areas until you are happy with the results. Let it air dry before wearing.
When it is completely dry go back over it quickly with the bristle brush one more time to get it super fluffy.
Here is the elbow of the sherpa sweater after. Before it was really flat and matted.

I was very happy how my sherpa sweater turned out after I tried this method. I don’t do this every time I wash it. Just when I think it needs some fluffing up again. I hit it with the brush and spray bottle.
I also heard of people using hair conditioner mixed with water in their spray bottles too. Maybe, next time I will try it. Have you??
