The Basics of Yarn Pom Poms

At their core, yarn pom poms are simple yet versatile creations made from yarn. They consist of tightly wound yarn strands that are trimmed and fluffed to create a spherical shape. While the concept may seem straightforward, the possibilities for customization are endless. From choosing different yarn textures and colors to varying the size and density of the pom poms, crafters can tailor these whimsical embellishments to suit any project or aesthetic.

What you need to make pom poms at home:

Yarn : Choose yarn in your preferred color(s) and weight. Different yarn weights will produce pom poms of varying sizes and densities.

Scissors: Sharp scissors are essential for cutting the yarn and shaping the pom pom.

Cardboard: You can make pom poms using cardboard cutouts, they offer a convenient and consistent way to create uniform pom poms.

Prepare Your Materials:

Gather your yarn, scissors and cardboard cutout. When using cardboard, cut out a piece 3 inches by 4 inches.

Cut a piece of yarn about 6 inches long and set aside.

Wrap the Yarn:

Hold the cardboard and begin wrapping the yarn around it. The more yarn you wrap, the denser your pom pom will be. Experiment with different wrapping techniques and yarn colors to achieve your desired look. For this pom pom I wrapped it it between 80 to 100 times.

Secure and Cut the Yarn:

Once you’ve wrapped enough yarn, carefully cut the yarn from the skein.

Remove from the Maker:

Remove the yarn from the cardboard, carefully slide the yarn bundle off the end.

Take the separate piece of  6 inch yarn you cut before and tie it tightly around the center of the wrapped yarn.

Tie it tightly in a knot around all the yarn.

Trim and Shape:

With sharp scissors, cut all the loops of yarn. To create a spherical shape  cut all the uneven pieces of yarn sticking out. Use your own judgment to ensure the pom pom is evenly shaped.

Cut all the uneven pieces.

Fluff and Finishing Touches:

Once trimmed, fluff the pom pom to give it volume and texture. You can also trim any uneven strands for a polished finish.
