How to make a coffee cozy

This is a fun sewing project to make a coffee cozy. Here I show you step by step how to make your own. Enjoy cozying up to coffee, tea, apple cider and hot chocolate.

This is a great sewing project to welcome fall. Cozy up all your hot beverages! These coffee cozy’s are so quick to make up. I made some in several different flannel patterns.

I created a FREE printable template for you to use. Link is provided towards the end. Also, you can watch my YouTube video tutorial at the end to see me make one.

Cut out the template

Print out the FREE printable template provided below. It prints on a regular sheet of printer paper. Then cut it out so you can trace it.

My favorite scissors for sewing projects.

Get two pieces of fabric and one piece of batting ready to be traced.

You need a front piece, back piece and a piece of batting for the middle. The batting makes it padded and nice and cozy!

Trace the template on the fabric.

Trace the template on the batting.

First, cut on the lines. Cut 2 pieces of fabric.

Second, cut on the line. Cut 1 piece of batting.

Now, you have 3 pieces to work with. This fabric that I bought actually had the same pattern on the both sides. So, I didn’t have to worry about which way was facing up. If your fabric isn’t like this then you want to make sure that you start by putting the right sides together to sew.

The closure

how to make a coffee cozy

For this cozy I decided to make a button closure. How to make this is you need to get an elastic. I bought some hair ties. I picked a coordinating color to match my project. Cut the elastic in half. Then pin it on the right side of the first piece of fabric. Face the elastic in, that way when you put the other piece of fabric on top you won’t be able to see it. That way when you turn the work inside out the elastic loop closure will be on the outside.

Pin it down, make sure its in place.

Then take the second piece of fabric and place that on top.

Pin it all together

Take some pins and pin all three pieces together.

These are my favorite pins to use when sewing.

All pinned and ready to be sewn.

Start sewing

how to make a coffee cozy

When you start sewing make sure you secure the elastic loop first.

Then continue around the edge leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

When you get to the long edge, leave a 2 inch gap. This is so you will be able to turn your project inside out.

Here is the 2 inch gap.

This is the back of the project. Looking at the batting.

Here in the corners its to pointy. There is extra fabric that will make the corners bulky.

Cut the corners off. Be careful not to cut your stitches. Also trim any extra fabric around all the edges to neaten it up.

Turn you work

Now, go back to the 2 inch opening and start to turn it inside out.

Make sure to turn out the corners nicely.

As you can see here. The elastic loop is on the outside now.

This is what it should like now, you’re almost done!

Closing the gap

Take the gap and start to fold in the edges.

Fold them in and hold them down and secure with some pins.

Here are the pins holding to closed.

Run the edge through the sewing machine. This will close the gap and create a nice looking border stitch.

The border stitching all done. I think I creates a polished look to the finished cozy.

Add the button

Here is the final step in making your coffee cozy. Pick out a button.

how to make a coffee cozy

Secure the button into place by sewing in the holes several times. When it’s secure tie a knot in the back.

All done!

OMG this is so cute! I have no idea how to sew but it is a major goal of mine and will probably be one of my challenges next year. This seems like it would be a good project for me when I do finally get started.

Love the simplicity of this, and also love how these reusable cozies are so much more eco friendly than the traditional ones.
