How to Loom Knit a Hat

I’d like to teach you how to make this easy loom knit hat. It also includes a brim and pom-pom. This is an easy and quick hat to knit for beginners.

Only using one skein of super bulky yarn, it makes this project easy and fast to complete. Taking about an hour to make.

Let me show you from start to finish how to make this hat. I also include a YouTube tutorial with this post.

How to Loom Knit a Hat

I love whipping these hats up. They are super fun and quick to turn out lots of them. I like that because then I can use different colored yarn.

The supplies you need are super bulky yarn, a round loom, a loom pick, needle and scissors.

Looms come in different sizes and therefore have different amount of pegs on them. I chose to use the loom that has 36 pegs. This size loom will make a hat that will fit between a toddler and teen. If you want to make a larger hat then size up the loom that has more pegs. Also, if you want to make a hat for a baby then size down the loom with less pegs.

A general loom sizing chart goes like this:

Baby hat use loom with 31 pegs.

Toddlers, Teens and smaller adults use loom with 36 pegs.

Adults and larger use a loom with 41 pegs.

Getting started

To start, pick up the loom and have it face you where the small peg on the side is facing you. Take the yarn and wrap around the peg on the side 2 times to hold the yarn in place.

Then in a counter clockwise direction wrap the yarn around each peg, creating one loop on each peg.

Once you reach the beginning again, create one more round of loops on each peg.
Now you will have 2 loops on each peg.

Now, pick up the loom pick. On the last peg that you make your loop insert the pick under the bottom loop and pull it up and over the top loop. Then, do this to each peg again going in a counter clockwise direction.

When you get back to the beginning again you should only have one loop on each peg.

Start over again by wrapping each peg with one loop of yarn. Creating 2 loops again. Repeat the same steps by picking up the bottom loop up and over the top loop all the way around.

As you can see here, the rounds are forming on the loom. The first 15 to 20 rows will create the brim to this hat.

Creating the brim on the hat

Here you see I stopped making rows around the loom. Here we will start creating the brim.

Undo the yarn that you wrapped around the starting peg on the side in the beginning.

Now, take the starting row and fold it in half and bring it up the loom pegs. Line up the first stitched you made and hook them onto each peg.

You should have 3 loops on each loom peg. Take the bottom loop and bring it up and over the top 2 loops. Do this all the way around. This will secure the brim into position.

After that continue wrapping and looping the around the loom.

Hat forming

Make about 15 to 20 more rows. The hat length should measure around 8 inches long. This is the body of the hat.

Finishing the hat

At this stage, when you are done making all your rows, take the yarn and wrap it around the whole loom 2 times. This will give you enough yarn to get the hat off of the loom.

Cut the yarn.

Take the needle and tread the yarn onto it. Start at the first peg and insert the needle and tread under the loop on the peg. Pull the yarn all the way through and then take the loop off of the peg. Do this for every peg around.

Here you can see the hat is starting to come of the loom at this point.

Once it is all the way off the loom them pull and cinch the yarn tight to close the hole on the top of the hat.

Pull the needle and tread trough the hole in the middle of the hat so the yarn is on the inside of the hat.

Tie a knot to secure it closed. Cut off remaining yarn.

Also weave in  and cut off the yarn from when you started the hat.

Easy Pom-Pom

If you would like to add a pom-pom to your hat, I will show you the easy way I make them.

loom knit hat

Cut a piece of yarn about 12 inches long. Set aside.

I take a large serving fork and wrap the yarn around it a lot. Wrap it around a lot will make your pom-pom nice and fluffy and full looking.

After your done wrapping your fork, cut the yarn. Then take the piece of yarn you left on the side and tread it trough the fork.

Tie this piece of yarn in the center and tie it tightly.

Take the pom-pom off the fork and insert your scissors on one side and cut through all the yarn. Then do the same thing on the other side.

Fluff up the pom-pom ball and cut any stranglers off to make it nice and round.

loom knit hat

Take the 2 pieces of yarn and tread them trough the top of the hat, turn inside out again and tie the 2 pieces together to secure the pom-pom to the top.

Yay! You made a hat!

When you cut the yarn for the crown you need to tie a knot in the ends And then start threading?
