Supplies you need to make these stepping stones

  • Silicone baking pan
  • Cement
  • Water
  • Glass Mosaic Beads

These stepping stones are pretty easy to make and that’s what we like, easy!

Just grab a flexible silicone baking pan. These are great to use because they peel right off the cement when it is dry.

In a bowl mix a few cups of cement with some water. This isn’t really exact measuring for this, just mix the cement until its not to wet and not to dry. You want it somewhere in the middle consistency. I did notice if the cement has too much water in it that the gems kind of sink into the cement and get lost. You want the cement still firm enough to hold the mosaic gems on top.

Mix it up

Add your water little by little and mix until you have the best consistency. We used a metal bowl and spoon to mix it. The cement does get a little tough to mix.

Fill the pans

After you mixed everything really well. Make sure all the cement is mixed with the water, you don’t want to get any dry spots. That could lead to your stepping stone to crack later on.

Fill up your silicone baking pans. Make sure to level the top of the cement. I also tapped the pan on the table to release any air bubbles that might of got trapped in.

Smooth them out

stepping stones

Smooth out the top as best as you can to get your working surface ready to add your mosaic gems.

I decided before we mixed all the cement to lay out the pattern that I wanted to create first so once the cement was ready I could just pop them in. You don’t want to the cement to dry before you get all your gems in and mess up your deisgn.

Add your mosaic gems

So, now go ahead and add all your mosaic gems. Make sure to place them with a space in between so they get stuck in the cement well. Make sure to push them down to make sure they are in place.

We made some pretty flowers on our stepping stones.

Let it cure

stepping stones

You want to leave them outside, to cure and dry all the way before using them.

Here you can see that I had mine outside for about 2 days to dry and I popped them out of their molds.

I placed them in between my raised garden beds.

Display and use in your garden

Here are the final stepping stones all done and in the garden. Don’t they look great?

WOW!

This was a fun summer project to make one day. We really liked how they came out and plan on making some more to place around the garden.

They are functional, that I can walk on them and not on the grass. They also cut back on how much grass I will have to weed wack during the summer.
